Charles Mason, The Art of the Sketch, or avoiding the “it was a dark and stormy night” syndrome:

Often, young composers dive into composition, starting at the beginning and adding to the piece until the end without having a clear view of the entire work.   Or they rely on outdated or overused forms as if pouring clay into a mold in a ceramics class. Mason will discuss the art of sketching by indulging in a class project to sketch a new work.
